Wood effect laminate flooring

Choosing the Right Wood Effect

Wood effect laminate flooring can recreate many different timber looks, from pale and natural oak through to warmer walnut, smoked wood and deeper brown finishes. Rather than choosing on colour alone, look at the grain pattern, knots, tonal variation and surface texture. These details can have a significant influence on how convincing the floor looks once it is installed across a larger area.

Plank format matters too. Wider or longer boards can give a room a different sense of scale, while bevelled edges can make the individual planks more distinct. If you want a calmer appearance, consider designs with relatively consistent colouring and subtle grain. For a floor with more character, look for greater variation between planks and more pronounced timber detailing.

Think About the Wood Look in Your Room

The same wood design can appear quite different depending on the room around it. Light and natural timber effects can work particularly well where you want to maintain a bright, understated interior, while richer brown and darker woods can introduce warmth and stronger contrast. Existing furniture, doors, skirting and other timber finishes are also worth considering when comparing shades.

Samples are particularly useful with wood effect flooring because photographs cannot fully show how the grain, texture and colour respond to the light in your home. View your shortlisted samples at different times of day and alongside the main furnishings and finishes in the room before making your final choice.

Check the Specification as Well as the Appearance

Once you have narrowed down the wood designs you prefer, compare the practical specifications of each floor. Thickness, plank dimensions, installation system, manufacturer warranty and stated room suitability can vary considerably between products that initially look very similar.

For busy hallways and frequently used living areas, check the manufacturer's durability information for the individual product. If the floor is intended for a kitchen, bathroom or another area where moisture may be present, make sure the particular laminate is specifically approved for that application rather than assuming that all wood effect laminate has the same level of water resistance.
