Self-Adhesive LVT Flooring

What Is Self-Adhesive LVT Flooring?

Self-adhesive LVT is a type of luxury vinyl flooring supplied with adhesive already applied to the back of each plank or tile. During installation, the protective backing is removed and the flooring is positioned onto a suitable prepared subfloor. This removes the need to spread a separate flooring adhesive and makes self-adhesive LVT an accessible option for many DIY flooring projects.

You may also see this installation method described as peel-and-stick LVT or self-stick vinyl flooring. Designs can include realistic wood and stone effects, allowing you to achieve the appearance associated with other types of luxury vinyl flooring while using a different method of installation.

Preparing a Floor for Self-Adhesive LVT

The simplicity of the adhesive backing does not remove the need for careful subfloor preparation. The surface beneath self-adhesive LVT generally needs to be suitably smooth, clean, dry and correctly prepared for the particular product. Irregularities in the subfloor can affect both the finished appearance and the performance of a relatively thin vinyl floor.

Always follow the flooring manufacturer's installation instructions, including any requirements for subfloor preparation, primers, acclimatisation and suitable substrates. Check the individual product specification before installation rather than assuming that every self-adhesive LVT can be fitted over the same surfaces.

Self-Adhesive LVT or Glue Down LVT?

Both installation methods secure LVT directly to a prepared surface, but there is an important difference. Traditional glue down LVT requires a separate compatible flooring adhesive to be applied during installation, whereas self-adhesive LVT already has its adhesive backing applied during manufacture.

Self-adhesive flooring can therefore appeal to customers looking for a straightforward DIY installation method. Glue down LVT, however, is available in a much wider choice of domestic and commercial specifications and remains the established option for many professional installations. The right choice should be based on the room, expected use, subfloor and individual product specification rather than installation convenience alone.
