Commercial sheet vinyl flooring

Choosing Commercial Sheet Vinyl Flooring

Commercial sheet vinyl covers a wide range of flooring designed for different environments and performance requirements. A floor suitable for a general office or retail space may have very different characteristics from one intended for a hospital corridor, commercial kitchen or another area where enhanced slip resistance is required.

Start with the demands of the space rather than choosing solely by colour or design. Consider expected foot traffic, the likelihood of spillages or contamination, cleaning requirements and any relevant acoustic, hygiene or slip-resistance requirements. Check the individual product specification and manufacturer guidance to make sure the floor is suitable for its intended application.

Safety Flooring and General Commercial Vinyl

Not all commercial sheet vinyl is safety flooring. General-purpose commercial vinyl can provide a durable surface for busy environments, while specialist safety flooring is designed to provide enhanced slip resistance where there is an increased risk of contamination underfoot.

This distinction is particularly important when specifying flooring for areas such as commercial kitchens, healthcare environments, washrooms and other locations where water, grease or other contaminants may be present. Where slip resistance is a requirement, compare the manufacturer's technical information and select a product appropriate to the specific conditions rather than relying on the general description of commercial vinyl.

Match the Specification to the Environment

Commercial flooring may need to satisfy requirements beyond general durability. Depending on the project, these can include acoustic performance, resistance to indentation, ease of cleaning, compatibility with wheeled traffic or suitability for healthcare, education and other public environments.

Pay attention to wear layers, usage classifications and any specialist performance information provided for the individual product. Two sheet vinyl floors that look similar can be intended for very different applications, so technical specification should form an important part of the buying decision.

Installation and Subfloor Preparation

Commercial sheet vinyl normally requires careful subfloor preparation and appropriate installation. The finished surface can reflect imperfections beneath it, making the condition and preparation of the subfloor particularly important. Some projects may also require welded seams, coving or other detailing depending on the environment and specification.

Always follow the flooring manufacturer's recommendations for subfloor preparation, adhesives, installation and maintenance. For larger or technically demanding commercial projects, professional installation is generally advisable.

Compare Commercial Sheet Vinyl

Flooring Hut supplies commercial sheet vinyl from established manufacturers including Altro, Forbo, Gerflor, Polyflor and Tarkett. Individual ranges can differ considerably in construction, performance and intended application, so compare the technical specification of the particular floor rather than selecting by manufacturer alone.

If you're still deciding which type of vinyl is appropriate for your project, our sheet vinyl flooring guide covers the main considerations when choosing sheet vinyl.
