Rustic Rules!

Rustic, in and of itself, relates to the countryside or to rural living, but as an adjective it can mean plain and simple. But rustic in terms of flooring is a whole different kettle of fish!

Rustic Grade vs Rustic Finish

First, let’s distinguish between ‘rustic finish’ (RF from now on) and ‘rustic grade’ (RG from here on out). RF refers to the appearance of the flooring. The appearance of this finish can be described as a ‘heavily distressed look’, as in the floor looks older than it is. A RF can be applied to different flooring materials, from laminate to luxury vinyl tiles and even ceramic tiles can give off that appearance when finished in this style. RG, however, refers to the quality of the wood itself. RG wood often falls below better grades of natural wood flooring. The reason it’s considered second grade wood is because it often contains a high frequency of knots, it’s length is often irregular and there may be deeply ingrained marks and dirt in the wood grain.

So, if you’re really going for that ‘cabin in the woods’ feel and you’re pretty handy when it comes to woodworking, then RG wood might provide the flooring finish you desire. However, if like most of us, you simply want that gorgeous rustic look without the headache of working with second grade wood, then finding flooring materials with a RF is the way to go for you.

You can browse our range of RF flooring across a variety of materials by visiting Flooring Hut and searching for ‘rustic’ in the search bar.

The warmth and personality rustically designed rooms offer is second to none. They are often full of character, charm and life. You can transform your home to encapsulate all those ideals with RF flooring. See you on the next one!
