What is Vintage Flooring?

Vintage is another one of those words you hear bandied about all over the place. But if we’re being honest with ourselves, we may not actually know what this word means, let alone with regards to flooring. So let’s shed some light on it!

Vintage Definition

It was originally used to refer to wines, ‘Oh, that’s a vintage red.’ But thankfully we can use it outside of the world of fermented grape juice because it can also mean something from the past that is of high quality. So it’s not a style, it’s an age. But how old exactly? Technically, anything from 20 years old to 100 years old can be classified as vintage, but really you want that item to be 50+ years for it to authentically resonate.

With Regards To Flooring

So if you truly want vintage flooring in your house, you’re going to need to source some 50+ year old planks of wood, rip them up from wherever you find them, prepare them, refit them in your home and then ‘Voila, you have authentic flooring!’ Sounds like a lot of effort when you could create the same effect with new flooring. ‘New vintage’ sounds like an oxymoron, but it exists in the world of flooring. Check out Expona Simplay’s White Vintage Wood below. Flooring manufacturers have simply taken new materials and designed them to give off an older, aged aesthetic. These new materials are easier to find, often cheaper and much easier to fit than truly old and authentic wood. Make sure you fully understand the difference between ‘vintage’ and ‘rustic’.

Vintage flooring, whether with authentic 50+ year old materials or the newer range of materials that are easily accessible today, offers a throwback to the past. This aesthetic reflects an often simpler, happier time, full of great memories. Instilling this kind of ethos in your house can create a really calming and peaceful environment, which is great to return home to particularly after the madness and chaos of work. You can make that initial leap by installing floors which reflect these principles today. I’ll see you on the next one!
