Warm Floors in the Winter!

Winter is coming! Are you worried about having cold floors in your home? Well, here is some advice about warm winter floors:

Carpet is the King in Winter

Carpet is the classic go-to flooring material when we think about warm flooring. However, not just any carpet will do, carpets with thick and long piles (fibres) work the most effectively for retaining heat. So, this winter if you’re laying a new floor in your home consider laying carpet to create a warm, cosy feeling in your living room or bedrooms.

Underlay Saves the Winter Day

Carpet is great, but nine times out of ten you don’t want to lay carpet in your kitchens or bathroom, as they are not water resistant and are prone to dampness. Luxury Vinyl Tiles are the flooring of choice for most kitchens and bathrooms because they are waterproof and often have a nice grippy texture underfoot. But isn’t vinyl cold? Yes, if it’s laid directly over concrete. However, if you lay a nice thick underlay below the vinyl then actually luxury vinyl tiles can feel quite warm and comfortable underfoot. So, don’t forget to lay underlay and don’t cheap-out on your underlay either – a good quality underlay is vital for thermal insulation and cosy vinyl tiles in the kitchen and bathroom.

Laminates Are Similar to Vinyl Tiles

Let’s say you don’t want to lay carpets in your living areas or bedrooms because you suffer from allergies or are worried about the carpet fibres trapping dirt. No problem, laminate is a much cleaner and dust-free alternative to carpet and, if you remember the above advice, about laying high-quality and thick underlay below your laminate then you can enjoy a thermally warm floor too. Underlay is key here; it can’t be emphasised enough!

What About a Rug?

So, you don’t want to rip up your existing floor to lay a fancy new underfloor heating system and you don’t plan to smash up your existing cold porcelain tiles and lay a fuzzy carpet over the top, that’s understandable. So, here’s a low cost yet highly-effective alternative – buy a rug! Rugs work on top of almost every type of flooring, from wood to laminate and from vinyl tiles to even carpets. Often, they add character to a room and create a nice visual appeal.
