An Introduction to Bathroom Floors

You may not spend the most time in this room, but choosing the right floor for your bathroom is one of the hardest decisions a homeowner will face. It needs to fit the aesthetic of the room. It also should be waterproof and ideally have some grip for safety, and maybe some heat retention properties so it’s warm underfoot. There are just so many things to consider and with so many different floorcoverings available these days, choosing the perfect floor for your bathroom may leave you pulling your hair out. If so, hopefully this brief guide can help you!

Carpet in Bathrooms

No one carpets their bathrooms these days, do they? In defence of carpet it is slip-resistant and warm underfoot, but its water absorbency is a big problem. So, to answer the question: No, not many people would choose this floorcovering for their bathroom. But if you really want it, we are not going to stop you!

Porcelain and Ceramic Tiles and Stone Tiles

Undoubtedly, these flooring materials are amongst the most beautiful that you can find on the market. However, they do pose a few problems. Firstly, they can be slippery when walking with wet feet. Secondly, they are fairly cold underfoot, which defeats the purpose of a nice warm bath. Thirdly, the require a bit more maintenance, whether that’s keeping the grout between the tiles clean or applying the preserver/sealer on top every now and then. That being said, they will last a long time and they do provide that ‘classic’ bathroom finish.

Laminate

This is a very affordable laminate flooring option for bathrooms and excels in grip and warmth underfoot. However, it is not waterproof. It is, however, water resistant. So long as you are quick to mop up any spillages, you should be okay. This option is great if you are looking for a wood finish flooring; however, if you wanted stone effect or other designs then you need to look at vinyl flooring.

Sheet Vinyl and Luxury Vinyl Tiles

A popular choice for modern homes. Vinyl can come in sheet form, which will require a professional floor fitter to install it for you. It can also come in the form of luxury vinyl tiles, which can either be fitted by a flooring expert or by a DIY-savvy person up for a challenge. Vinyl is relatively warm underfoot. It also comes with textured surfaces which improves grip and reduces slip. Both sheet vinyl and vinyl tiles are waterproof – hurray! You can also find vinyl mimicking both wood patterns and stone patterns, so your design choice is greater. These floorcoverings are very affordable and exceptionally easy to maintain. Hands down the best choice for your bathroom.

Wood Flooring

Having real wood in your home is simply stunning and adds value to your property. However, having it in your bathroom may not be the best idea, as it is prone to warping with excess moisture. That being said, engineered wood flooring is more stable and less prone to warping, but still not the best choice for your bathroom. But if you really want it, we won’t hold you back!

Rubber Flooring

The curveball in the list. Rubber is grippy, so safer. It retains the heat well, so comfortable underfoot. Also, rubber flooring is water resistant, so it won’t absorb excess water. So why don’t more people have it in their bathrooms? We are not sure… Perhaps because of aesthetics or maybe because it’s not a mainstream choice yet? Either way, we can’t see why it wouldn’t be perfect for your bathroom!

Final Thoughts

As you can see there are plenty of things to consider when choosing the ideal floor covering for your bathroom. From safety, to comfort, to design, to price – these are all worth considering carefully. If you are unsure what to go for, we would recommend vinyl of some kind (sheet or tiles). But ultimately the choice is yours, so choose wisely.
