An Introduction to Kitchen Floors

For many people, the kitchen is the heart of the home. That being said, it is one of the most demanding floors in your home. Kitchen floors should be water resistant in case of spillages, it should be able to handle heavy footfall, it should be easy to clean, plus it needs to look good too since a lot of time will be spent in here. With all those demands, it may seem like the perfect kitchen floor is impossible to find… Well, hopefully this post can begin to point you in the right direction with regards to floorcoverings.

Carpet for Kitchen Floors

Have you ever seen a carpeted kitchen? No, we haven’t either. That’s because carpet fibres will absorb spillages and may even trap spilt food, leading to unwanted bacteria growth. However, if you really want to have a carpet in your kitchen, then don’t let us stop you!

Laminate in Kitchen Floors

This is a very affordable flooring option for kitchens. Laminate isn’t waterproof; however, it is water resistant. So long as you are quick to mop up any spillages, you should be okay. This flooring option is great if you are looking to mimic a wood finish; however, if you wanted to mimic stone effect or other designs then you need to look at vinyl flooring.

Porcelain and Ceramic Tiles

Tiles made from either of the above materials will undoubtedly look classy in a kitchen. Porcelain is less absorbent compared to ceramic, so it perhaps the better choice. Both are fairly easy to wipe away spillages and stains from. However, do note, that if you are prone to clumsiness and dropping pots and pans that these tiles may crack and need replacing. Also note: You will probably need a professional to install these tiles properly.

Sheet Vinyl and Luxury Vinyl Tiles

A highly recommended floorcovering for kitchens. Vinyl can come in sheet form or in plank form. Vinyl sheets will require a professional fitter to install them; however, vinyl planks can be laid by a DIY savvy individual if required. Vinyl flooring is waterproof. It is also competitively priced, being a little more expensive than laminate, but significantly less expensive than real wood. It is easy to clean, whether you spill liquids or solids, sweeping and mopping these surfaces is easy. You also have a wide range of design options, from wood effect to stone effect to parquet effect and abstract designs. Definitely, one of the best floorcoverings for kitchens available today!

Wood Flooring

Having real wood in your home is second to none and adds financial value to your property. However, wood is prone to moving and warping in a heat and moisture sensitive environment, like a kitchen. But fear not, as engineered wood flooring provides a more stable option with that same beautiful real wood finish!

Rubber Flooring

The eyebrow raiser in the list. Rubber is soft underfoot, so good for your knees if you spend a long time standing up cooking. It is also super durable, so will last for a very long time with just basic maintenance (sweeping and mopping). So whilst it is not a very popular kitchen floor choice now, we reckon it could be one for the future of home improvement!
