Introduction to Warm Floors in the Winter

Winter is upon us, as that seasonal chill starts setting in. Are you worried about cold floors in your house this festive season? Well, hopefully this post can give you some practical advice about how to warm up your floors in the short term and long term.

Carpet

A long-term fix to warm up your home underfoot is to install carpet as your floorcovering. Choose a quality carpet with thick and long fibres as these will retain heat better. High quality brands of carpet that are available through Flooring Hut include Abingdon and Cormar amongst others. A short-term fix would be to buy a rug. Again, with thick and long piles to trap heat. Place your rug over your colder laminate, vinyl or tiles to provide temporary warmth and comfort to your feet.

Underlay and Underfloor Heating

A long-term fix for chilly floors would be to lay a new floorcovering with extra thick underlay or even an underfloor heating system underneath. Thick underlay will keep out the cold of the concrete below and in doing so will keep your floor at a comfortable room temperature. Underfloor heating goes beyond this by actually supplying a heat source from below, whilst adding a touch of luxury to your home. A short-term fix for freezing floors would be to buy a pair of indoor slippers and extra thick socks. Did you know that the common myth that you lose lots of heat from your head is actually incorrect? Scientifically, you are more likely to lose heat from your hands and feet. So ditch the woolly hat for some gloves and thick socks and you will be feeling much more cosy this winter.

Moisture

One major culprit for cold houses is the damp. A long-term fix would be to install a water-resistant flooring like luxury vinyl tiles over some thick underlay. Flooring Hut’s own brands of luxury vinyl tiles called Burrnest and Real Textures offer great quality for money. This type of flooring helps reduce the build up of moisture in a room, thus reducing the chill in your bones. A short-term solution would be to buy a dehumidifier to help dry out your room and in doing so indirectly warm it up.

Conclusion to Warm Floors

There are no cheap ways to fix a cold house. You could opt for some of the short-term measures outlined above to make this Christmas comfier. But eventually you will need to address the problem on a longer-term basis, hopefully the advice outlined above can also help you with that. From all of us at Flooring, we want to wish you a warm and Merry Christmas!
