Introduction to Residential and Commercial Carpets

Nice Carpets have been popular in homes and in public spaces for generations, and yet not all carpets are made equal. They can be made form different materials, from natural ones to synthetic ones. Carpets can be woven with different pile styles, from cut pile, to fibre bonded, to loop pile. They can be dyed different colours, from dark to light. Rolls of carpets can even come in different lengths, from 2m to 4m and sometimes 5m or longer. But the biggest difference is whether the carpet was designed for residential use or commercial use.

What’s the difference between Residential and Commercial Carpets?

Commercial carpets need to be extremely durable to withstand high footfall traffic. Due to this, commercial carpets are often made from synthetic materials woven into short piles. You will often find commercial carpets in a darker range of colours because these deeper shades hide dirt and blemishes that occur over time well. Also, you will often find commercial carpet in longer rolls, as you usually have more floor space to cover. Price per square metre, commercial carpets are usually cheaper than their residential counterparts.

Residential carpets are the complete opposite to their commercial brothers. You will often find residential carpets made from natural materials, which is healthier in the home. Residential carpets are also woven with longer piles for a softer feel underfoot. As expected with this combination, the durability is reduced, but then again so is the footfall in a house usually. Most residential carpet ranges come in a lighter variety of colours because fairer shades often ‘open up’ a room making it feel more spacious and welcoming. You often find residential carpets in the shorter 2-4m roll options, as there is usually less floor space to cover. As far as price per square metre, residential carpet is a bit more expensive than commercial carpet, but it is still considered a very affordable flooring option.

Can I use Residential carpets in a Commercial space and vice versa?

You can use residential flooring in a commercial space if you want to, but it is not recommended. It will wear out very quickly, but if you want to give it a go don’t let us stop you! You can use commercial carpet in your home if you like, after all it is your home. Some larger families actually find it a cost-effective and durable option for laying in kid’s bedrooms and higher traffic areas of the house.

Conclusion about Residential and Commercial Carpets

It is clear that residential and commercial carpets have been made differently. Therefore, it is key to know which type of carpet your particular flooring project will benefit from. If in doubt, speak to a flooring specialist. Hopefully, this has helped you navigate some of the many differences between these two types of carpet. Happy flooring!
