Debunking Flooring Myths

Someone, somewhere, at some point, decided upon something and that ‘myth’ has stuck around for ages. The world of flooring is no different, there are plenty of myths floating about. Now, some of these myths are truthful and worth considering, but some just aren’t true and are worth debunking. Let’s take a look at a few!

Solid wood floors are better than engineered wood floors

Whilst personal taste must take precedence when making a decision on what floor to install, it would be unfair to say that solid wood floors are better than engineered floors. Engineered wood floors are often more stable, durable and resistant to moisture making them much more flexible with regards to which rooms in the house you can use them in. Myth = debunked!

Dark floors make a room look smaller

This myth draws on the idea that light spaces look bigger and dark spaces appear smaller. Whilst we know for a fact that a room’s size does not change depending on the floor installed, we do know that the eye can play optical illusion tricks on the mind. For most people, a dark floor, dark paint, and dark furniture will make a room appear smaller. Myth = true!

Laminate looks cheap!

When laminate first come onto the floor scene, this myth was truth. The early laminates really did look rubbish… However, since then, technology has developed and laminate floors often look as good as vinyl floors and even sometimes as good as real wood floors themselves! Myth = debunked!

Carpets are bad for people with allergies

This myth has elements of truth and elements of untruth within it. Some carpets, particularly older ones, do harbour allergens, which then get released into the air and negatively affects people with allergies. However, some newer carpets, actually contain technology that helps trap allergens from the air within the fibres and therefore improves your room’s air quality. When choosing the right carpet for you, a little research goes a long way! Myth = inconclusive!

Vinyl floors are history

Vinyl doesn’t have to be the faded patterned floor your nan had in her kitchen years ago. Particularly, with the invention of luxury vinyl tiles, vinyl can be anything you like, from wood to stone, from abstract to tiled, from patterned to solid colours. This variety of design options actually means that instead of decreasing in popularity, vinyl in increasing in popularity. Myth = debunked!

Underlay is unnecessary

Underlay is a scam flooring manufacturers have invented to con people out of more money”. This couldn’t be further from the truth! Underlay plays a vital role to the longevity of your floor and your comfort underfoot and is therefore a necessary and vital flooring purchase. Myth = debunked!
