Healthcare sheet vinyl flooring

Choosing Sheet Vinyl for Healthcare Environments

Healthcare buildings can contain very different types of space, so flooring should be selected according to where it will actually be installed. A waiting room or consultation room may have different requirements from a busy hospital corridor, treatment area or location where water and other contaminants are more likely to reach the floor.

Consider expected foot traffic, cleaning requirements, wheeled equipment and whether acoustic or slip-resistant performance is important. Check the individual manufacturer's technical specification and recommended applications rather than assuming that every commercial sheet vinyl is suitable throughout a healthcare building.

Cleaning, Hygiene and Installation Detailing

Healthcare floors are often subject to regular cleaning, making the suitability of the flooring for the intended maintenance regime an important consideration. The way sheet vinyl is installed can also matter, particularly where a continuous and easily maintained finish is required.

Depending on the environment and specification, installations may incorporate welded seams, coved skirtings or other detailing around edges and junctions. Subfloor preparation is equally important, as imperfections beneath sheet vinyl can affect the finished surface. Always follow the flooring and adhesive manufacturers' installation and maintenance guidance.

Consider Wheeled Traffic and Acoustics

Hospital corridors and other circulation areas may experience frequent movement from trolleys, wheelchairs, beds and other wheeled equipment as well as ordinary foot traffic. Where this applies, check that the chosen flooring is suitable for the expected level and type of use rather than selecting purely on appearance.

Acoustic performance can also be relevant in wards, corridors, consultation areas and other healthcare spaces where reducing impact sound may contribute to a quieter environment. Acoustic sheet vinyl ranges offer different levels of impact-sound reduction, so compare the manufacturer's stated performance where this is part of the project requirement.

When Is Safety Flooring Required?

Not every healthcare area requires specialist safety flooring. Where water or other contaminants create an increased risk of slipping, however, a floor with appropriate slip-resistant performance may be necessary. Bathrooms, wet areas and certain treatment or utility spaces can therefore require a different specification from relatively dry waiting or consultation rooms.

Assess the conditions in the particular area and compare the manufacturer's slip-resistance information and intended applications. This helps avoid both under-specifying flooring in a demanding location and specifying specialist safety flooring where it is not required.
