Industrial sheet vinyl flooring

Choosing Sheet Vinyl for an Industrial Environment

Industrial workplaces can contain a mixture of production areas, workshops, corridors, staff facilities and other spaces, each placing different demands on the floor. Some locations may primarily require a durable and easy-to-maintain commercial surface, while others may need additional slip resistance or a more specialist flooring specification.

Start by considering how the particular area is used, the level and type of traffic it receives and the conditions the floor is likely to encounter. The manufacturer's stated applications and technical specification should always take priority over the general description of a product as commercial or industrial flooring.

Consider Traffic, Trolleys and Everyday Wear

Industrial facilities can experience concentrated foot traffic as well as movement from trolleys, carts and other wheeled equipment. Where this is relevant, check that the flooring is suitable for the expected type and frequency of use and pay attention to the manufacturer's usage classification and performance information.

Different areas within the same facility may need different solutions. Corridors, staff rooms and relatively light-duty operational spaces can have very different flooring requirements from areas exposed to machinery, heavy point loads or intensive production activity.

Think About Contamination and Slip Risk

Water, oils and other contaminants can affect the suitability of flooring in some industrial environments. Where these conditions increase the risk of slipping, a specialist safety floor with an appropriate slip-resistance specification may be required.

Do not assume that every safety floor is suitable for every type of contamination. Compare the manufacturer's technical information and intended applications against the conditions expected in the actual workplace, particularly in workshops, processing areas and other locations where the floor may regularly become contaminated.

Know When Sheet Vinyl Is Appropriate

Commercial sheet vinyl can work well in many areas within industrial premises, including corridors, staff facilities, laboratories, offices and some light-production or workshop environments. It can provide a practical surface where durability, cleaning and a continuous floor finish are important.

However, conventional commercial sheet vinyl is not the correct solution for every industrial application. Areas exposed to very heavy machinery, extreme point loads, aggressive chemicals, excessive heat or other severe operating conditions may require a more specialised flooring system. Matching the product to the actual environment is therefore more important than choosing a floor simply because it is described as heavy duty.

Installation and Subfloor Preparation

Good subfloor preparation is particularly important in operational areas because sheet vinyl can reflect imperfections in the surface beneath it. The subfloor, adhesive and installation method should meet the flooring manufacturer's requirements, while joints, edges and transitions need to be appropriate for the expected traffic and use.
